A villa is, hands down, the easiest way to do a family holiday in Koh Samui. You get the run of a private home instead of squeezing into hotel rooms, the pool is yours alone, meals happen on your schedule rather than the buffet's, and the kids can be kids without a "shhh" every five minutes. For families travelling with grandparents, or two families sharing, it usually works out better value than connecting hotel rooms too.
The catch is that not every beautiful villa is a good family villa. The things that make a stay easy with children — a shallow pool step, a flat garden to run around, a kitchen for early breakfasts, a beach you'd actually let a six-year-old paddle in — aren't always obvious from the photos. Here's what to look for, and where to start.
Why a villa beats a hotel for a family holiday
Once you've holidayed as a family in a private villa, it's hard to go back to a hotel. A few reasons stand out:

In short, a villa gives a family room to breathe — everyone together when you want, everyone with their own space when you don't.
What makes a villa genuinely family-friendly
When we put villas into our family collection, we're looking for the features that matter once you're actually there with the kids:

If you tell us the ages of your children when you enquire, we can point you to the villas that suit them best — a villa that's perfect for teenagers isn't always the right one for a toddler.
The best areas in Samui for families
Where you stay shapes the whole holiday, mostly because of the beach.
Choeng Mon is many families' first choice. The main beach is a calm, shallow bay that's about as safe as Samui gets for young swimmers, and it's an easy hop to the airport and to Fisherman's Village.
Bophut suits families who want a bit of life on the doorstep. Fisherman's Village has relaxed restaurants right on the sand and the famous Friday Walking Street market, which kids tend to love.
Maenam and Bang Por on the north coast are quieter, with long, calm beaches and a more local feel — great for families who want to slow right down.
Lipa Noi on the west coast has shallow, gentle water and Samui's best sunsets, which is why so many of our finest family villas sit along this stretch.
The livelier beaches of Chaweng and Lamai can still work brilliantly for families with older children or teenagers who want more to do — it just comes down to the right villa in the right spot.
Things to do with kids in Samui
You won't run out of things to fill the days. The island has waterparks, mini-golf, the Coconut Farm Museum, ziplining and quad-bike trails in the hills, plus easy boat trips out to the Ang Thong Marine Park. A private boat charter is a lovely way to do it as a family — you set the pace, stop to snorkel where you like, and there's no sharing with strangers. Our activities and attractions guide has the full run-down of family days out, including a dedicated family activities section.
Make mealtimes easy with a private chef
One of the quiet luxuries of a family villa is not having to think about dinner. A villa with a private chef means breakfast is ready when the early risers wake, the children can eat at their own time, and parents get a proper meal once the little ones are down. Most chefs are very happy to cook simple, kid-friendly food alongside the Thai dishes.
Travelling as a bigger group?
If you're combining families, bringing the grandparents, or planning a reunion, take a look at our villas for large groups as well — these give everyone their own space while keeping the whole party under one roof. For the most spacious, fully-staffed homes, our luxury collection is the place to look.
