This location is in the popuar north east of Koh Samui and is bordered at one end by the 12 metre high golden Big Buddha statue as part of the Wat Phra Yai temple. Next to the temple is a fresh food market and at certain times of the day you will see the long boat fiisherman dropping off their catch.
The location of Big Buddha is well known for the hub of boating activity with a number of piers servicing the tour boats for sightseeing the neighbouring islands or snorkelling and diving trips. There are also regular ferry and speedboat trips over to the neighbouring island of Koh Phangan being especially busy during the time of the full moon parties held there.
The village of Bangrak dominates this area where many of the expat residents have made their home and offers the usual amenities of a small town such as banks, pharmacies, convenenience stores, restaurants sports bars and the usual array of food stalls, laundry services and massage shops.
The beach that borders the village is known as Big Buddha beach and due to the lack of hotels and commercial activity in certain places it has retained it's charm boordered with small rustic resorts and a small number of luxury holiay villa rentals.
The Big Buddha area is an ideal place to stay if you are looking for a quiet white sand, palm fringe swimming beach, and stunning scenery with plenty of entertainment and restaurants in the vicinity wthin walking distance.
The popular Fisherman's village at Bophut is just a few minutes drive and the lively nightlife of Chaweng is 10 minutes drive.
