Koh Samui has more than 30 beaches, and they are not interchangeable. The calm, shallow bay that is perfect for toddlers sits at the opposite end of the island from the lively sweep with the beach clubs. We live here, and after 20+ years arranging villa stays the question we answer most often is simply: which beach is right for us? This guide breaks the island down honestly, so you can pick your beach first, then your villa.

The beaches at a glance

Choeng Mon: best for families with young children

On the island's north-east tip, Choeng Mon has soft white sand and clear, shallow water kept calm by its sheltered bay, with swimming all year round. It is about as child-friendly as Samui gets, and it is the beach we recommend first to guests travelling with under-tens. The village just inland has shops, pharmacies and restaurants, and you are ten minutes from the airport without ever hearing it. Lipa Noi: sunsets and the softest, shallowest water on the island

Facing west on the quiet side of the island, Lipa Noi is wide, flat and virtually rock-free, with a gentle slope that lets small children paddle a long way out in safety. It is also Samui's sunset beach, looking across to the Five Islands. One insider note: in the dry months the tide goes out a long way in the afternoons, which opens up rock pools and sandbars children love, though serious swimmers should time their swim for the higher tide. Bophut and Fisherman's Village: beach with restaurants on the doorstep

Bophut's soft-sand beach is backed by Fisherman's Village, the island's most charming evening strip: relaxed restaurants right on the sand, boutique shops and the famous Friday walking street market. It is the easy choice if you want to swim by day and stroll to dinner by night without ever getting in a car. See our Bophut villas.

Maenam: relaxed, local and better for swimmers than people expect

A long, laid-back beach on the north coast with a genuinely local feel and calm water that deepens quicker than the toddler-friendly bays, which real swimmers appreciate. Bang Por: quiet sands and the island's best local seafood

On the north-west coast, Bang Por is where islanders go for fresh seafood at local prices, eaten at simple restaurants on the sand with Koh Phangan on the horizon. An offshore reef keeps the water calm, and the sunsets rival Lipa Noi's. It is a world away from the busy beaches, which is exactly the point. Chaweng and Lamai: the lively side

If you want the buzz, Chaweng is the island's main event: a long, beautiful sweep of sand with beach clubs, shopping and nightlife behind it. Lamai, just south, is the slightly more relaxed version. The clever trick on this coast is staying at the quiet ends: the north end of Chaweng and the coves around Lamai give you the restaurants within reach and peace at home. Laem Sor and the south: Samui as it used to be

The south coast is the island's quietest corner: long, empty beaches, fishing boats and barely any development. Beyond the beach: the water itself

Some of Samui's best moments are just offshore.
